Main Gallery // What's Cookin!?, organized by Terri Moore and her Cooking Corner class
"Food, cooking, and togetherness have always been a part of the NIAD community over the years while working alongside Andres Cisneros-Galindo and Kim Huta.
I’ve learned a lot, have taken those things, and prior experience of cooking with my mother and grandmother since the age of 9 years old, and have kept the tradition going.
When the virtual studio started in 2020 due to the pandemic, we all put our heads together about how we were going to make the virtual studio feel as "in-person" as possible. I took a look at the Zoom settings and decided to turn one of the little Zoom boxes into a “corner” of the studio for cooking. "Cooking Corner" took off running, allowing me to cook in my kitchen from home, and teach artists how to prepare snacks and meals from my own recipes and theirs. We also celebrate different food cultures and holiday-themed cooking corners.
Cooking Corner is a place where artists can share artwork, make art, share food ideas and recipes, and interests they have in cooking, and also cook along with me from the comfort and safety of their own homes. Since we have returned to being on site, Cooking Corner has made its way back to the 23rd Street NIAD studio, where myself and a group of artists meet weekly, and come up with recipes to prepare, prep, cook and serve to the NIAD community.
In the exhibition What's Cookin?!, you will see food, art and creativity from various NIAD artists. So feel free to pull up a chair in your mind, take a seat at our dinner table, and see what's cookin'!"
- Curator and Community Studio Manager Terri Moore
About Terri Moore
I was born in Sacramento California and raised in Oakland. I have a deep love of all things art. In my spare time I practice makeup artistry, cooking, and jewelry-making. Working at NIAD for the past ten years, and now as Community Studio Manager, has been a blessing to me. The creativity and artwork created by artists is a beautiful sight to witness and support each day. NIAD is not just an art center to me, it is a second home.
Support for Cooking Corner is provided by Urban Tilth and John Beaver and Erica Perez of Oaktown Spice Shop.
Annex Gallery // Crossover
Crossover is an apt title for this show, which will showcase the vibrant and newly-connected fiber art scenes of NIAD and Cedars. Crossover is a companion to the textile-centered exhibition Follow the String, on view at Marin MOCA. In preparation for this show, artists from both programs visited each other's studios, and participated in a tee-shirt and doll making workshop at Marin MOCA. T-shirts and dolls from this workshop will be on view in NIAD and Marin MOCA.
Though there are many overlaps in materials and subjects, each artist has their own distinct way of deploying fiber in traditional and nontraditional ways. Artworks in the show include representations of loom and lap weaving, embroidery, cardboard mobiles, papier-mâché dragons, paint-splattered quilt-like paintings, a seed-beaded cane, pompoms, braided cords, crocheted afghans and many more.
Virtual Artist Talk + Curator Walkthrough // Thursday November 10, 1 to 2pm via zoom
Gallery Manager Julio Rodriguez, November exhibition curator Terri Moore and participating artists will be live and lively in the NIAD galleries discussing their processes and practices. The conversation will be live-streamed to the public with ASL interpretation and captioning provided.
Opening Reception + Workshops // Saturday November 12, 1 to 4pm
The NIAD community gathers to celebrate artists in the November exhibitions with refreshments, music, and art for sale. NIAD facilitator Terri Moore will lead a cooking demonstration with the Cooking Corner artists.
About NIAD Art Center
NIAD’s visual art program promotes meaningful independent living by artists with disabilities while its artists create remarkable contemporary art. In a unique open studio environment, and with the guidance of qualified staff, NIAD artists paint, build sculpture, mold clay, work with textiles, and make sound recordings and digital art. As they explore and express their creativity, exhibit artwork in professional-quality galleries, participate in the community, and occasionally earn money from selling art, their skills of observation and project management improve, and their feelings of independence and self-esteem increase.
Each NIAD artwork is an original piece of contemporary art that tells an individual story from the perspective of an artist with disabilities. Frequently remarkable, surprising, and engaging, NIAD artwork has become a highlight of the Richmond art scene and has received recognition from the national artistic community. Wondering what NIAD’s acronym stand for? "Nurturing Independence through Artistic Development." For more information, visit niadart.org.
