About NIAD Art Center

NIAD Art Center is a progressive art studio in Richmond, California that promotes creative expression, independence, dignity, and community integration with disabled adults. Frequently remarkable, surprising, and engaging, work by NIAD artists garners attention from the contemporary art world on a global scale.

Each work created at NIAD is an original piece of contemporary art that tells an individual story from the perspective of an artist with disabilities. In our Studios and Galleries, the 70 artists NIAD serves develop a sense of pride in their artistic abilities, connect with each other and with NIAD's community of supporters, and earn an income from the sale of their work.

NIAD was founded in 1982 as the “National Institute of Art & Disabilities,” alongside its sister studios Creative Growth in Oakland, and Creativity Explored in San Francisco. The three studios were established by artist and art educator Florence Ludins-Katz, and her husband psychologist Dr. Elias Katz, who moved to Berkeley in the mid-60s just as the unintended consequences of public psychiatric hospitals were beginning to be deeply felt in their community. After hosting a group of artists with disabilities for an art-making gathering, they were motivated to found the first of what is now referred to as a “Progressive Art Studio” - Creative Growth - in their garage.

The Progressive Art Studio has proved to be a profoundly direct, generative, and life-changing model for artists who participate, and dozens of similar studios now exist across the country and around the world. NIAD is proud to be among the longest-running of these organizations still in existence, and with the help of a dedicated and engaged community of supporters, is well-positioned to thrive for another forty years!
