The event is designed to empower children aged 8-17 who face major challenges when caring for their naturally kinky, coiled, wavy, and curly hair. According to Julie Persons, founder of Queen Cosmetics and Salon, "These challenges are known to have led to a lack of self-confidence, damaged, dry, brittle hair, and even hair loss. As a result, young curly-head kids become dependent on alternatives infused with harmful chemicals or that cause tension alopecia."
Julie hopes this event will shine a light on common issues faced in the community, stating "I too, was once that child who experienced these same challenges. However, I have spent many years seeking the proper education and training to properly care for my 4C hair. At 37, I have way less anxiety, uncertainty, resentment, and even depression when it comes to my hair. I feel more empowered and confident than ever and I want to share that with other children alike."
The workshop will cover:
- How to find your unique curl pattern
- Best practices for washing, conditioning, nourishment, and maintenance
- Style guides for celebrating your natural hair with confidence
Julie hopes that these clinics will spur long-term interest in natural hair care within the East Bay and beyond, with plans to expand the events to a quarterly basis.
