SF Bay Ferry Service Expansion

San Francisco Bay Ferry To Expand Commuter Service
Since the opening of the Richmond Ferry Terminal in 2019, the SF Bay Fery has proven to be a popular and eco-friendly alternative to driving for local residents. It is now the region's fastest growing regional transit service — earning rave reviews and strong interest in its further expansion.
“This Service Vision is a reflection of that interest, and of our commitment to aggressively pursue a new golden age of ferries in the Bay Area, where this world-class system is made even better, and is available to even more communities and more riders throughout the region.” — Jim Wunderman, Chair, Board of Directors, San Francisco Bay Ferry
Here are the four new proposed services identified by the agency as its strongest near-term opportunities:
- Berkeley
- Mission Bay (San Francisco)
- Redwood City
- Treasure Island (San Francisco)
Other locations in consideration include:
- Carquinez Strait communities such as Martinez, Pittsburg and Antioch
- Hercules
- Direct East Bay-Marin County service
- Foster City
- Additional routes serving South San Francisco
- Frequent service between Alameda and Oakland
While piloting its programs in new areas, the agency will also continue in its mission to electrify the fleet. To date it has secured over $117 million for the Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) Ferry Program. Funding will go towards converting the existing fleet and the construction of new zero-emission vessels.

More About The San Francisco Bay Ferry
SF Bay Ferry currently operates the cleanest ferry system in the country with a 17-vessel fleet powered by renewable diesel. Thirteen of those vessels meet the strictest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emissions levels. The agency is on track to award shipyard contracts for its first five zero-emission battery electric vessels later this year.
San Francisco Bay Ferry is a regional public transit agency tasked with developing, operating and expanding ferry service on the San Francisco Bay and with coordinating the water transit response to regional emergencies. The agency operates ferry routes connecting the cities of Alameda, Oakland, Richmond, San Francisco, South San Francisco and Vallejo.
